Does Perplexity use Quora? In practice, rarely. Perplexity can read any page it retrieves during a live web search, so a Quora answer that ranks for your question is technically eligible to be cited. But across two large studies of what Perplexity actually links to, Quora does not appear among its most-cited sources. If your goal is Perplexity visibility, Quora is a weak bet compared with the domains it leans on most.
How Perplexity decides what to cite
Perplexity is an answer engine. Instead of replying only from a model's training data, it runs a live web search on each query, calling a web_search tool and reading the results before it writes an answer (Perplexity docs). That means the pool of pages it can cite is decided at query time by what its retrieval surfaces, not by any fixed list of trusted sites.
It is also built to ground answers in the pages it retrieves. Perplexity's own guidance requires a citation on every sentence that uses information pulled from its search results. So when Perplexity states a fact, it points to a source, and the domains it points to are a direct signal of where it is finding usable content. Quora can land in that pool when a Quora thread ranks for a query, but ranking is the gate, and Quora clears it far less often than the sources Perplexity favors.
Does Perplexity cite Quora in practice?
No, not at a meaningful rate. Two independent, large-scale studies of AI citations both put Quora outside Perplexity's leading sources.
Ahrefs analyzed the domains AI assistants cite across roughly 76.7 million AI Overviews and about 953,500 Perplexity prompts during June 2025. In that data, Quora ranks highly only inside Google's AI Overviews, at 3.6% of citations, and does not appear in Perplexity's top-10 most-cited domains at all (Ahrefs).
Semrush found the same pattern from a different sample. It tracked citation behavior across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity over roughly 230,000 prompts in a 13-week window from July to October 2025. Perplexity's most-cited domains were Reddit, LinkedIn, NIH, Microsoft, and Google, with Quora absent from that leading set (Semrush).
Two studies, different months and different methods, same conclusion: Quora is not one of the sources Perplexity reaches for.

Why Quora shows up in Google but not Perplexity
The split is the interesting part. In the Ahrefs data, community platforms like Quora rank high only inside AI Overviews. Google's AI Overviews draw on Google's own index and its treatment of forum and Q&A content, so Quora threads that rank in Google search tend to carry into AI Overviews. Perplexity runs its own retrieval and, on the evidence, weights toward a different mix of sources. A strong Quora presence can pay off in Google's AI surfaces without moving the needle on Perplexity.
This matters for planning. If someone tells you Quora is a shortcut to Perplexity citations, the citation data does not back that up. Quora's value in AI search is real, but it concentrates in Google AI Overviews, not in Perplexity.
So where does Quora fit in an AI visibility plan?
Quora is a Google AI Overviews play more than a Perplexity play. If AI Overviews are where your buyers ask questions, a well-answered Quora thread that ranks in Google can earn you a mention inside those overviews. That is a legitimate reason to invest in Quora, and it is the case we make on our Quora AI visibility page.
For Perplexity specifically, set expectations accordingly:
- Do not treat Quora as your primary route to Perplexity citations. The data shows it is not one.
- Prioritize the source types Perplexity actually cites, and make sure your own pages can rank for the questions you care about, since Perplexity's citations follow retrieval.
- Use Quora where it earns its keep, which is Google's AI Overviews, and let it compound your broader search presence.
None of this means Quora is wasted effort. It means matching the channel to the surface. Quora answers that rank pull weight in Google's AI features. Perplexity is a separate system with a separate source diet, and the citation studies make that difference concrete rather than theoretical.
The short answer
Perplexity can cite Quora because it reads whatever its live search retrieves, but in two large studies it does not, and Quora sits outside Perplexity's most-cited domains while ranking well only in Google's AI Overviews. Plan for that reality. Lean on Quora for the AI surface where it performs, and build Perplexity visibility around the sources it truly favors.
If you want Quora working for you in AI search, do it deliberately. Our Quora AI visibility service is built to place answers that rank and earn mentions in the AI surfaces where Quora actually pays off. Start there, and match every channel to the engine it moves.
